DIN verification: how to check a company director in India

A DIN(Director Identification Number) is a unique 8-digit number the MCA issues to every person who serves as a company director in India. Verifying a DIN tells you whether the person signing your contract is a real, qualified director — and what else they're connected to. Here's how.

What DIN verification confirms

• The director exists — the DIN is valid and maps to a real person on MCA records.
• DIN status — Active, Deactivated (e.g. for non-filing of DIR-3 KYC), or Disqualified.
• Directorships — every company the person is currently (and formerly) a director of.

Why one director's record matters for a supplier

Directors are the strongest link between companies. Checking a DIN often surfaces risk the company page alone won't:

• Disqualified director — under Section 164 of the Companies Act, directors of companies that failed to file returns can be disqualified. A disqualified person signing for your supplier is a serious red flag.
• Too many directorships — a person on dozens of companies, many recently incorporated or struck off, is a classic shell-company pattern.
• Hidden connections— the same directors across "unrelated" vendors can reveal collusion or round-tripping.

How to check a DIN

1. Get the DIN from the company's MCA filings or the director themselves.
2. Confirm the 8-digit DIN is valid and maps to the expected name.
3. Check the DIN status (Active vs Deactivated / Disqualified).
4. Pull the list of associated companies and look at their status and ages.
