A GSTINon an invoice doesn't prove a supplier is genuine — a number can be well-formed, belong to someone else, or be cancelled. Verifying it properly protects your input tax credit (ITC)and flags fraud before you pay. Here's how to verify a GSTIN online.
1. Check the format first
A GSTIN is 15 characters (e.g. 33AAQCM3036R1ZW):
- State code — first 2 digits (33 = Tamil Nadu).
- PAN — the next 10 characters (the business's PAN).
- Entity number — 13th character (registrations per PAN in that state).
- Z + check digit — last two.
A wrong length or pattern means it's invalid outright. But a valid format only means it's well-formed — not real. See CIN vs GSTIN vs PAN.
2. Confirm it's active on the GST portal
The authoritative check is the live GST Network record. Look up the GSTIN and confirm:
- Status = Active (not Cancelled or Suspended).
- Legal/Trade name matches the entity on the invoice.
- Registration date — a very recent date on a large first order warrants extra care.
- Taxpayer type (Regular vs Composition) and state jurisdiction.
3. Match the PAN and the legal name
Because the GSTIN embeds the PAN, the registered legal name must match the company you think you're dealing with. A mismatch — say a GSTIN whose PAN format points to a proprietorship while the invoice claims a private limited company — is a red flag worth questioning.
4. Check filing history (the real signal)
An active GSTIN that hasn't filed GSTR-1 / GSTR-3B in months is a warning sign — and missing filings can put your ITC at risk. A genuine, operating supplier files on time. This filing history is one of the strongest legitimacy signals you can get.
5. Always match the bank account
Even a perfectly valid, active GSTIN doesn't protect you from invoice-redirection fraud. Before paying, confirm the bank account on the invoice belongs to the verified legal entity.
